Chapter Ten

When they arrived at the cottage, they found Xander dabbing Myra’s wound with a damp rag. She was lying shirtless on the sofa, her torso covered with a throw blanket that had once occupied the back of the sofa. She was clearly still unconscious. Her eyelids were peacefully closed and her chest was rising and falling gently, indicating even breathing. But her once-radiant, olive complexion now looked pale and sallow. The area around the wound on her shoulder was sickeningly dark and swollen, blood and pus crusting around it as if it was several days old.

“Damn, it’s getting worse!” Ash cried in dismay.

Eryn rushed forward, sinking to her knees beside the sofa. She stretched the back of one hand across her sister’s damp, clammy forehead while checking her pulse with the other. “She’s running a temperature,” she noted, her voice filled with concern. “C–could you please go into the bathroom and get me some alcohol from the cupboard, Ash?”

He must have been taken aback by the question, because instead of responding he just stared down at her with a stunned look on his face. It wasn’t until Xander shouted, “What the hell man? Go!” that he seemed to snap out of his trance.

“Right! Sorry, I’m on it. Which way is it?”

“Through that passageway,” she told him, pointing to indicate the right direction.

When he was gone, she turned back to Xander and said, “Use the alcohol to dab her body when he comes back with it. That will help to break the temperature. Then you guys can move her to the bed in the front bedroom, okay?”

“Yeah, okay,” he replied, glancing up at her with dejected eyes, his very soul shining in their turquoise depths. “But hurry, please. I don’t know how much longer she’ll be able to hold on.”

“Sure thing, I’ll get to it right now. I found a potion in the book on our way here. It should only take a few minutes to make it.” She pushed herself up again, quickly getting to her feet. But before walking off, she reached out and patted his shoulder gently, offering some reassurance. “It’s going to be okay. You have to believe that, for her sake.”

Then she grabbed the Book of Spells along with the satin bag of witch’s tools and hurried out of the sitting room, in the direction of the humble kitchen. She glimpsed Ash returning with the alcohol as she passed by the passageway that led to the bathroom and hastened her steps, just as eager to avoid a run-in with him as she was to get the potion going. She was more than overwhelmed by all that she had experienced today. Her senses didn’t need any more excitement right now.

Spreading the Book on the counter top, she flipped the worn pages until she came to the one she had marked earlier. The caption read Antidote for Unusual Poison and she figured it was probably her best bet. At least she hoped it was. God only knew what she would do if this didn’t work.
